Do I need planning permission for an extension?
Most single-storey extensions and many two-storey rear extensions are covered by Permitted Development rights and don't need planning permission. However, conservation areas, listed buildings and some properties have stricter rules. Building Regulations approval is always required.
How long does a loft conversion take?
A typical loft conversion takes 8–12 weeks depending on complexity, size and whether structural work or new windows are needed. Timescale increases if replumbing or rewiring the floor below is necessary.
What is the difference between Building Regulations and planning permission?
Planning permission controls what you can build and where. Building Regulations ensure the work is safe, structurally sound and meets current standards for insulation, electrics and drainage. Both may be needed.
Can a chimney be removed during renovation?
